Well this is it! The Queen is coming from behind the scenes and right into the spotlight! Now her debut release of make up bags was small, but you have to start somewhere right? I mean the girl just taught herself how to sew just this year. Anyway, I sat down with my Queeny and had a little interview so that you could all get to know her a little better. Let's see what she had to say.
MK - Hello there my love. Even though I know every little detail about you, why don't you tell the MK fans a little bit about yourself?
MQ - I’m a Gemini and I enjoy long walks in the cemetery, drinking wine, Alkaline Trio, scary stories, animation, the internets, roller derby, blood, working out, horror inspired art and horror movies. I started wanting to wear all black when I was in second grade. At one point I went as Jason Voorhees for Halloween for like 3 years in a row. I love what you have done and it inspires my creative side. I’m not sure why it has taken me this long to start my own creations, but it probably had to with the fact that I can’t sit still. It takes a lot of patience to create something.
MK - What made you decide to buy a sewing machine and start putting together handmade products?
MQ - I had an idea one day that I would be the best bag maker in the universe! I bought a sewing machine and a bunch of supplies and then the next day I forgot about that idea and moved on to something else. Finally, after like 6 months I decided I would actually make use of the supplies that I had purchased. The ultimate goal was to have my own projects to work on while you work on your drawings. I wanted to contribute to the business on the creative side. Putting receipts into QuickBooks isn’t really my idea of fun, but yeah I do that too.
Vanessa's first releases were made almost entirely of old tee shirts.
MK - What was it like going through the process of learning a brand new skill (sewing)?
MQ - In the beginning it was very frustrating, but when I finally made it through a project without making any mistakes, seeing the final product was really rewarding. I always forget that learning something new takes time and practice. I have also learned that when I feel rage it’s time to take a break and do something else for a minute. Now that I have the hang of it I'm enjoying it more and more and realizing that the possibilities are endless.
MK - Now I know what you've created recently is just the beginning. Can you give us a hint as to what you'd like to work on in the near future?
MQ -What I am most excited about is custom fabric. As you know, I had you draw a design for me and we're getting it printed soon. I can’t draw but I can have you to make any one of my bazillion ideas come to life for me and I feel really lucky for that. As far as future work, I plan on making larger, more detailed bags. I would also like to experiment with some pillow cases, covers and maybe custom neck ties. I've also recently picked up some Sculpey and sculpting tools. Oh yeah, I want to start writing horror movie reviews too.
MK - It's obvious that we all love horror here. What are some of your favorite pieces of horror entertainment? Movies, books, shows, artists, etc.
MQ - I would have to say that my favorite horror movie of all time is MAY... and Maniac. I'll stop there because I could go on forever. I'm also very interested in true crime stories, anything paranormal and Japanese horror films. I will watch ANY horror movie. As far as artists go, one of my all time favorite artists/writers is Jhonen Vasquez. I have a tattoo of his comic Johnny the Homicidal Maniac on my arm. Other artists I enjoy are Robert Paul Nixon , Alex Pardee, and Jade Perez (no relation). She makes scary dolls and I will own one someday. Short films by Drew Daywalt. Author, Alvin Schwartz (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark). I LOVE the music of Kreeps, Creature Feature , and Wednesday 13. Hmmm...oh aaaaand David firth (Salad Fingers).
MK -Thanks for having a quick chat with me for your new release. One last question though. There is a room with no doors, no widows, nothing and a man is hung from the ceiling and a puddle of water is on the floor. How did he die?
MQ - When I'm not sure how to explain something I like to go with the answer Magic! Or he was probably standing on some ice, but it seems like that would give him a lot of time to change his mind though.
Ice was the correct answer! Well now that you know the girl you can start picking up some of her creations at our online shop located HERE. As of right now there are only two bags available. The others were sold at our Horror for the Holdiays event in Detroit. Keep an eye planted right here at Monster King Productions for any and all things from Vanessa. Thanks for reading and see you next time!
